What Is PTE?

The Pearsons Test of English (PTE) is a test that is an alternative to TOEFL and IELTS for gauging a potential immigrant or Study Abroad Students proficiency in the English Language. The PTE is a computer-based test and the exam can be taken in either of two versions, academic or general.

Who Is The PTE Test For?

The PTE is typically taken by non-native English speakers who want to Study Abroad or Immigrate to Countries where English is the first language for communication.

The PTE scores are accepted for admission to many educational institutions in countries such as Canada, Australia, USA and UK New Zealand, the UK and the USA. Many top universities across the world including Harvard and Yale accept PTE Prominent universities accepting PTE Academic include Harvard, Yale, and INSEAD.

PTE General, on the other hand, evaluates potential immigrants for fluency in English and their ability to cope in an environment where English is the first language of communication.  

Features Of PTE

Following are the features of PTE

  • Candidates should be at least 16 years old in order to attempt the PTE
  • Candidates, less than 18 years of age need to provide proof of parents consent
  • Candidates have to register for the PTE test by logging in on the website. On successful login, the candidate will be redirected to fill the application and schedule the test date and center.

Syllabus For PTE Academic

PTE Academic is a three-hour long examination that tests the reading, speaking, listening, and writing skills of the candidate. The candidates are expected to listen to or read and answer questions.

The PTE academic test consists of three main sections listening, reading and speaking and writing. The questions for PTE academic are typically formulated in 20 different forms which include analytical, interpretation, multiple-choice and essay writing.

Syllabus For PTE General

The PTE general test consists of two sections, written and spoken. The written test helps to evaluate a candidates reading comprehension, listening, and writing skills, while the spoken test helps to gauge the candidates English Speaking Skills. The test is comprised of 6 levels which are linked to CEF, which is short for Common European Framework.

Test Results For PTE

PTE test results are normally declared in five business days from the date of taking the test. The PTE Academic scores have a validity period of two years from the date of attempting the examination. The PTE score becomes invalid once the validity period expires and is taken off the PTE site automatically.

Once the two-year period expires, the PTE score is then deleted from the site and can no longer be seen. PTE General Scores, on the other hand, do not have expiry periods.

Most Universities set their own scores as a threshold for admission and such there is no minimum score required for passing the PTE academic.
