Admission Deadlines in the US

USA Universities Admissions

USA consists of unlimited number of universities and colleges, and most of them follow semester or trimester system, that is why the deadlines for applications are diverse for every university or college. Each college or university in the US has their own admission due dates. Basically the top universities in the States have admission deadlines by 8-12 months before the commencement of the course, whereas the other colleges wind- up the admission process by 6 to 10 months before. In US, primarily two instruction systems are followed, that is semester system or quarter system. The universities and colleges have to follow any one of them. The Universities that follows Semester system, the system will be divided in to three semesters and the application deadlines will be as follows:

  • Spring (January): If any candidates want to get admission in the A or A+ grade universities in the US, then they should apply in the month of March and April of the same year. The B or C grade universities deadlines will be in the month of July/August for Spring admissions, and few C- or D grade universities will even have deadlines of October/November for Spring admissions.
  • Summer (May): For Summer admission the deadline will generally end by March of the same year.
  • Fall (August): For Fall admissions in top grade universities, students have to apply by Nov/Dec of the previous year. For B and C grade universities it will be Feb/March of the same year and for some D grade universities it would be June/July of the same year.

Semester System in Detail

Know the complete system details semester wise.

Fall Semester

The fall semester is the duration from mid of August to December and is the main semester of the whole year. Majority of the students are being admitted in this semester and also most of the grants and scholarships are also offered during fall semester. It is consists of 16 to 18 weeks. The top A grade universities in the US will close confirmations for fall semester by Nov or December end of the previous year. So if anybody is planning to enter in top universities in the Fall 2017, then they have to make applications by the Nov or December end of 2016. But if these dates are missed by any chance then there are certain institutes or colleges that would accept applications till Feb or March of the same year. Few universities would accept application till June or July of the same month. If the candidate applies early that is before March, then their chances of getting admission along with scholarship increases.

Spring Semester

The Spring semester is the duration between January to mid- May. The spring semester consists of 16 to 18 weeks. Candidates seeking for admissions in spring semester are required to send their applications to the University before July end of the previous year. Some universities may have September or October deadlines. The probability of getting confirmation and grant increases if the candidate sends the application before August.

Summer Semester

Summer Semester is the period between mid of May to mid of August. It comprises of 10 to 12 weeks. This semester is divided in to sessions like session I, session II etc and each session consists of 5 to 6 weeks. There are certain universities that don't provide confirmation for this semester, so the candidate is required to check as each university has diverse system.

Quarter System

The quarter system consists of four periods, fall, winter, spring and summer.

Fall Quarter

The period from late September to December is fall quarter system and is also the prime quarter of the year. Most of the admissions are done in this particular quarter in every university and so most of the grants are also given in this period. It comprises of 12 to 13 weeks. The candidates seeking for admission in Fall quarter have to send their applications to the Admission Office of the University be June end of the same year. Some universities might have July/August deadlines but it is advisable to send the applications by June end which will ensure early confirmation and grants.

Winter Quarter

The Winter Quarter is the period from January to March end and is comprised of 12 to 13 weeks. The candidates who want to apply in this quarter should send their application to the university by early October of the previous year. It might be that some universities would have due dates of November/December. But for early confirmation and grants its better to send the applications early.

Spring Quarter

It is the period from April to June end and is comprised of 12 to 13 weeks. If any candidate is looking for admission in this quarter then the deadline would be early January, for some Universities it could be Feb/March but it is advisable to send the completed application to the Admission Office of the University by early January for early confirmation and grants.

Summer Quarter

Summer Quarter is the period from July to August end and it comprises of 8 to 10 weeks. Similar to summer semester, summer quarter is also divided in to sessions and every session has 5 weeks. Some universities don't give confirmation to summer quarter while some do, so candidates have to check with each university about their admission policies.
