OTTAWA – The federal government plans to welcome 500,000 immigrants by 2025 to address significant labor shortages, said Mr.Sean Fraser, Immigration Minister. Mr. Fraser claimed in an interview that the government had taken into account the reality that immigrants would be joining a market for housing that was already under pressure. He continued, “It’s not lost on me that there are housing pressures in Canada, but the reality is, the cost of not bringing in newcomers is enormous when you look at our economic and demographic challenges”.
Changes to Express Entry System
Mr.Fraser has added that the new immigration plans focus on the placements of immigrants. Settling the newcomers in different regions of the country based on the demand for labor including small towns and rural communities. He has also mentioned the changes to the Canadian Government’s Express entry system which only focuses on the eligibility of an application to become a permanent resident and become an economical immigrant. With the changes, the federal government bodies can select the immigrants based on their area of expertise and what part of the country they are moving in.
He has also mentioned that the government is intended to invite skilled workers to Canada who has the required skills to build housing in Canada.
Increase in No.of Family Members admitting to Canada
Ottawa also has plans for a gradual rise in the number of family members who will be allowed entry into the nation as well as a general decline in the number of refugees.
Fraser made the point that, in recent years, Canada has been a global leader in resettling refugees, including Syrians, Ukrainians, and Afghans who were fleeing turmoil in their own countries. In addition, he pledged that the government would hire hundreds of extra employees and make other expediting adjustments to accommodate the anticipated surge in applications from people looking to immigrate to Canada.
Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada has previously come under fire for a backlog of immigration and potential permanent residence applications.
Following Statistics Canada's announcement that 23% of the population is made up of landed immigrants or permanent residents—the highest percentage ever and the highest among the G7 countries—the new strategy was announced a few days ago. Statistics are saying that, by the year 2041, 34% of the Canadian population will have immigrants.
