Working while you study in New Zealand

  • If you are a student pursuing a course in New Zealand, then you may be eligible to work while you study
  • If you are living in New Zealand on a student visa, then you can work part-time,when the course is in session,for up to 20 hours each week
  • You can work full-time during your vacation time

Requirements to Work While you Study in New Zealand

  • You will need to check you visa to determine if your visa makes you eligible to work.
  • Your eligibility to work could be in your visa stamp on your passport or could be mentioned in a letter
  • If you do not have proper eligibility to work, then you cannot work in New Zealand
  • If you are a student enrolled at a university in New Zealand, and have arrived on a student visa, then you will be eligible to work for up to 20 hours a week if
    • a.The duration of the course is of a minimum of two years towards a degree
    • b.Or, one academic year if you are studying in New Zealand as an exchange student
    • c.Or, the work is towards gaining a skill which will help you earn points under the skilled migration category
  • You can be eligible to work full time in New zealand if,
    • a.You are on a scheduled break or vacation,
    • b.You are a full-time student, for a minimum of one academic year
    • c.You are pursuing a course that provides you with at least 120 credits
    • d.The academic course, is expected to last for at least two semesters
    • e.You are enrolled in a post graduate or doctoral course at a university in New Zealand
    • f.There is no specific clause on your visa that restricts you from working.
  • You should have passed an English language tests such as IELTS and the test results should be at least 2 years old
  • If you are already pursuing a course in New Zealand, with English as the medium of instruction, then you are eligible to work
  • The university where you are pursuing your course, is classified as category 1 provider by New Zealand Qualifications Authority
  • If you are below the age of 18 then, you should have written permission from your parents or guardians to work
  • You cannot be self employed if you plan to work in New Zealand on a student visa

Post Study Work in New Zealand

  • You can apply for this study visa once, If you have completed a bachelor’s degree or higher in New Zealand
  • The qualification earned by you should be Level 4 or higher as per the New Zealand Qualifications Framework
  • If your qualification is at level 4 to level 6, then your course duration, should be of 60 weeks or more
  • If your qualification is at Level 7 or higher, then you can work if your course duration is 30 weeks or more
  • You should have completed your course in the English language
